How Micro-Needling Can Restore Aging Skin

Those who are looking to rejuvenate their aging skin can utilize a technique called micro-needling. Micro-needling is a non-invasive treatment that is performed on the skin once it has been prepared with a special lidocaine gel. The purpose of this gel is to provide numbness. This treatment also makes use of a hand piece which is used to generate small channels within the dermis layer of the skin, which will activate the natural healing process which is found in the body.

This healing process causes the growth of both collagen and elastin, which will enhance your skin texture.  Micro-needling also causes a dramatic decrease in the appearance of both wrinkles and fine lines, as well as a reduction in hyperpigmentation. Improvements have also been seen in the reduction of pock marks from acne due to the bridging of collagen.

Why Is Micro-Needling Effective?

Micro-needling is a procedure which has been in development for the past decade. In the past, a basic hand roller with small needles was employed, but today an electric hand piece is used with needles that can be adjusted. Human skin is constantly being assailed with UV light, smoke and harsh weather, as well as the free radicals which are produced within the body.

When you combine this with the effects of gravity and the internal aging mechanism within the body, this leads to a situation where the skin gradually wears out over time, even if you are perfectly healthy. Micro-needling is a procedure that is designed to slow the appearance of aging and return your skin to a beautiful, natural state.

Where On The Body Can This Treatment Be Used?

In addition to the face, Micro-needling can also be used on the arms, neck, hands and abdomen. The hand piece can be applied to any location on the body where the skin has a weak structure, or where there are stretch marks or scars. Enhanced dermal thickening will also diminish the occurrence of miniature capillary vessels inside the skin. As some people age, vertical lines may appear around their mouth, and this treatment has been shown to reduce them.

How Many Appointments Are Needed?

Micro-needling utilizes a technology which is similar to laser treatment, but it is much more cost effective. Micro-needling requires multiple treatments in order to be effective, usually three appointments. Depending on the severity of the patient, as many as six sessions may be required. It is best to speak with your surgeon to determine exact number of treatments that will be needed for you. After your initial session is completed, you will typically need to return twice a year for maintenance.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Once your appointment is complete, you should expect some redness to be present on your body for as long as five days. Most patients use mineral makeup to conceal the color. Additionally side effects that patients may experience with micro-needling include tightness on the skin, a slight burning sensation and moderate flaking. It can take as long as two weeks for positive changes to appear on the skin.
