The Risks of Getting Cosmetic Surgery Overseas

Undergoing cosmetic surgery in the United States can be very expensive. As a result, a growing number of people are traveling overseas for these operations, where the rates are much cheaper. One of the most popular destinations for these overseas surgeries is the Dominican Republic, but people are also traveling to places such as Mexico or Thailand. In the Dominican Republic alone, four women have died as a result of botched plastic surgeries, while 19 have suffered serious complications. Therefore, those that are thinking about traveling overseas for plastic surgeries should think twice.

Why Overseas Cosmetic Surgery Should Be Avoided

At first, it may seem that getting affordable plastic surgery in a gorgeous, tropical country where you can relax and recover on the beach afterwards is an alluring idea, and it would be if the doctors in these countries were held to the same rigorous standards as those in America. Unfortunately, they are not. Any type of surgical operation involves risk, and when the doctors and staff are not thoroughly trained or qualified, they can endanger the lives of their patients.

Many plastic surgeons in developing countries fail to follow basic safety or sanitation standards. They may also use equipment which is unsterilized, or they may administer medicine incorrectly. Furthermore, even when plastic surgery is done correctly, the patient must return for follow-up appointments. These appointments ensure that the patient’s body is healing correctly and that there is no risk of complications. Because of the inherent nature of medical tourism, follow-up appointments are often infrequent or non-existent, meaning if the patient has complications their life could be in danger.

No Recourse if Something Goes Wrong

If a plastic surgeon operating in the United States makes a mistake which results in the death or severe injury of their patient, they can be sued, have their license removed or even possibly serve time in jail. In many developing countries, if a doctor makes mistake, particularly while operating on a foreigner, they have little to worry about. The legal systems of many developing countries are sometimes corrupt and inefficient, and police can be easily paid off with bribes.

Therefore, a foreigner who suffers injury or death as a result of botched plastic surgery will get little recourse. Their family will learn that trying to seek justice within the legal systems of these countries is next to impossible without huge bribes. This is why most American insurance companies provide no coverage for anyone that travels overseas for surgery.

It is certainly true that plastic surgery in the U.S. is more expensive than countries such as Thailand, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, but there is a good reason for this. How much is your life worth to you? If you desire plastic surgery, and are unable to afford it within the United States, it is best to save money for it, or take out a line of credit. Remember, either option is better than facing the possibility of death or lifelong injury as a result of a botched foreign surgery operation.
