Tips To Help You Recover Faster After Sclerotherapy

Many people find varicose veins to be very unattractive, and will opt for a surgical procedure called Sclerotherapy to get rid of them. During this procedure a substance called sclerosant will be added to the vein, which will cause it to shrink. Eventually the surrounding tissue will absorb it. As with all surgical procedures, Sclerotherapy requires recovery once the operation is completed, as this gives the patient time to heal while preventing infection. Below are some tips that can help you recover properly.

Walk Regularly

During recovery it is important to walk around as much as you can. Walking is a form of exercise and it will decrease the pressure which is added to the veins, which will reduce the chances of getting thrombosis. Most cosmetic surgeons will recommend walking at least 30 minutes per day, so if you’re thinking of visiting a local store or restaurant near your home, consider walking instead of driving.

Wear the Support Hosiery

Once your operation has been completed the surgeon will ask you to wear special hosiery which will compress the veins that have received treatment. While this hosiery may sometimes be uncomfortable to wear, failing to wear it during your recovery may reduce the effectiveness of the procedure.

Avoid Heat and Humidity

During the first two days after your operation is complete you must reduce your heat exposure as much as possible. This means no saunas, spas, hot baths or anything that may add heat to the veins, including sunlight. While you can still take showers, the water should be set to a cooler temperature.

Avoid Using OTC Medications

When recovering from Sclerotherapypatients should avoid both OTC medications or supplements since this can lead to bleeding. Some specific medications that should be avoided include fish oil, aspirin, omega 3 and ibuprofen. However, one supplement that many surgeons will recommend is Arnica, which is a homeopathic medication that can be taken three days before and after the operation for reduced bleeding and swelling.

Refrain from Heavy Exercise

While walking is a great way to recover faster from Sclerotherapy, patients will want to avoid heavier exercises like squats or weight lifting. The reason is because this can create pressure on the veins which can lead to a variety of problems. No heavy exercises should be performed until at least 48 hours after your operation is complete, and it is also important to keep the leg elevated.

Compared to other cosmetic procedures, Sclerotherapy is quick both in terms of the operation itself and the time needed for recovery. However, patients must follow the instructions of their doctor, and should also return for follow up appointments to ensure that the veins are healing properly. In the hours and days following the operation the veins will be subject to swelling and bleeding, but this should not be a cause for concern as this is normal. While recovery will be easier for some patients than others, the discomfort usually ends quite rapidly, allowing the patient to return to their normal activities.
