The Truth About Male Breast Reduction

While cosmetic surgery has traditionally been associated with women, a growing number of men are paying for these procedures. One of the most popular cosmetic procedures is male breast reduction, which is used to treat a condition called Gynaecomastia.

What is Gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia is a condition which is sometimes referred to as “man boobs.” It is very distressing for the men that have it, and is sometimes mistaken for being a sign of obesity, which isn’t necessarily the case. Gynaecomastia results from overgrowth which occurs in the glands of the male breast. The breasts may grow to an unnatural size, regardless of how much a man works out or the shape he’s in. It is believed that as many as 50 percent of males in the United States will experience this condition to some degree during their lifetimes.

While weight loss can certainly reduce Gynaecomastia in some men, the condition has also appeared in men that are slim. The reason for this is because the condition involves increased glandular tissue, which is unrelated to one’s weight.

Gynaecomastia has numerous causes. Some cases are hereditary, while others are the result of underlying diseases. Some illnesses which can lead to the appearance of Gynaecomastia include hypogonadism, hyperthyroidism or diseases of the kidney and liver. Gynaecomastia can also result from aging, as well as steroid usage.

While Gynaecomastia may be embarrassing for most men, the condition itself is not life threatening. However, men who experience symptoms such as open sores on the chest, fluid leaking from the nipples or pain and tenderness within the breast should contact a doctor immediately, as these may be signs of a dangerous underlying health problem.

Gynaecomastia Treatment

Gynaecomastia can be treated through a process called male breast reduction. This is a type of surgery which involves the elimination of unnecessary breast tissue and includes liposuction. This type of surgery has a high rate of success, and the cost depends on the severity of the condition and whether the patient needs one or multiple procedures. Patients are advised to take off a week in order to recover from the operation.

Most men who are considering male breast reduction have a lot of questions about it. One of the most common is whether or not the condition will return. The good news is that once Gynaecomastia is gone, it’s gone for good. The tissue will not regrow once it has been removed completely. Many potential clients are also concerned about the degree of scarring that will be present after the surgery is completed. A scar will also be present near the edge of the bottom part of the areola.

When selecting a surgeon for male breast reduction, it is important to make sure they are experienced. They should have done multiple operations and should have photos which can prove it. They should also be board certified, and the best surgeons are those that maintain good rapport with their patients, who are comfortable sharing their concerns as well as their medical history.
