The Best Cosmetic Procedures for the Jaw and Chin

When it comes to facial appearance the chin and jaw are very important. This is because it defines your profile, and a weak chin is not desirable to most people. Many cosmetic surgeons, especially those who specialize in the face, will recommend changes to the chin or jaw which will enhance the profile and symmetry of their patients. Additionally, this type of surgery will also improve the appearance of the neck. The good news about chin/jaw procedures is that they are simple and straightforward to perform.

How Chin and Jaw Surgery Works

When a surgeon operates on the chin he will start by creating an incision, usually near the crease line under the chin or within the mouth where the gums connect to the lower lip. This tissue will be stretched carefully, which allows the surgeon to open a space where he can add an implant. The implant, which is comprised of synthetic material, will look and feel like natural skin, and comes in a variety of sizes. Once the implant is added, the surgeon will use special sutures to seal the opening. Many surgeons prefer making the incision within the mouth as no scarring can be seen afterwards.

Some patients feel that their chins are too large, and want to have them reduced. To achieve this the surgeon will again make an incision, usually inside the mouth or beneath the chin, and will then sculpt the bone down to a size that is more desirable. As you can imagine this requires a considerable degree of skill and patience. In addition to reducing the size of the chin, a surgeon can also reshape it. In most cases these procedures will last from one to three hours.

Post-Surgery Procedures and Recommendations

Once the operation is completed the surgeon will add a dressing that must stay in place from 48 to 72 hours. Patients should expect to have some tenderness during this time. There are a number of medications that can be used to reduce this discomfort. Patients may also find that chewing is difficult in the first couple of days after their procedure is finished, which means they must consume a diet of soft and liquid foods. It can take as long as six weeks for the swelling to subside. During the first few weeks after the surgery is completed the surgeon may recommend the avoidance of any physical activities which are strenuous.

Additional Factors to Consider

Many patients opt for facial cosmetic surgery because they want to improve their appearance. This form of surgery can also eliminate signs of aging while boosting your self-confidence. However, because these procedures are cosmetic in nature most insurance companies will not cover them. Patients will need to check with their insurance companies to determine precisely what types of procedures will be covered. The chin and jaw, while commonly overlooked, plays a pivotal role in the profile of the face, as well as the neck and the overall symmetry. Improving this one area of the body can have a positive effect on the surrounding areas.
