Types of Lasers Used in Skin Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is a cosmetic technique which can enhance the skin while lowering the impact of aging, facial disorders and sunlight. Not only is this treatment safe and effective, it is also more affordable than other cosmetic procedures. During this operation an intense beam of light is used to get rid of the outer skin layers which are damaged while encouraging the growth of fresh skin cells and collagen within the underlying layer. This leads to skin which is smooth and healthy. There are a number of different lasers that are used during this procedure, and it is important to become familiar with them and how they work.

The Erbium Laser

The erbium laser is designed to get rid of skin layers which are thin. While it is more accurate than the C02 laser it is also less powerful, and it is best used on patients who have darker skin as it reduces the chances of unwanted changes to pigmentation. The erbium laser is also the best solution for patients with healthier skin as the healing time will be much faster. Due to its accuracy this laser is well adapted to the treatment of wrinkles or fine lines.

Fraxel Laser Resurfacing

Fraxel resurfacing is a procedure which is unique. It is non-invasive which means there are no side effects such as aching skin or tenderness once the procedure is completed. The downside to Fraxel laser resurfacing is that it involves multiple sessions, and enhancements to the skin will appear gradually, which means that patients may not see results for weeks or even months. This may be undesirable for those that prefer faster results.

The C02 Laser

The C02 laser is the most powerful laser available on the market today. Skin which is treated by this laser will become smoother and stronger since the laser utilizes high temperature to control the bands of collagen which are located in the dermis. Due to its strength the C02 laser is capable of reducing or completely eradicating birthmarks, wrinkles, warts or scars. Research indicates that this laser has also been found effective in the treatment of skin cancer. However, the downside to this laser is that while powerful it is less accurate than the erbium laser, and patients who use it for treatment may also have side effects such as tender skin.

What To Expect During Your Treatment

Regardless of the type of laser that is used, skin resurfacing will typically be performed In either an outpatient surgical facility or a hospital. The doctor will begin by applying local anesthesia which will numb the area where the laser will be applied. Some doctors may also use a sedative. If the doctor plans to use a C02 laser he will typically use general or intravenous anesthesia, which means the patient will be asleep during the operation, but this is rarely done. Good cosmetic surgeons understand each laser type and how it can be combined with the proper anesthesia to provide the patient with the maximum comfort possible.
