What You Should Know About Breast Implant Scarring

Some women are not enthusiastic about breast augmentation when they find out it will leave scarring, but they shouldn’t be. Scarring is a normal part of most surgical procedures, and is not something you should be afraid of as it will heal over time. If you are interested in this procedure, you might have questions about breast implant scarring, and in this article, these questions will be answered.

What Scars Will You Get from Breast Augmentation?

The scars you receive will depend on the type procedure you undergo. For instance, many women choose to get a breast lift. Procedures which lift up the breast will necessitate an incision, and this incision will cause scarring. The scar will gradually fade over time, and the aesthetic appeal of the breast which has been lifted will supersede any scarring that occurs.

How Will the Scars Look?

There are three types of scars which commonly result from breast augmentation, and these scars are the vertical scar, the inverted T scar, and the Benelli scar. Each breast augmentation technique will leave behind distinct scarring, and the degree of scarring will differ based on the technique used. The Benelli pattern removes the lowest amount of skin, while the Inverted T pattern takes out the most. The vertical scar is somewhere in between, taking out only a moderate amount of skin.

There are also differences in the locations where the scars will appear. For instance, the Benelli scar will appear near the areola, creating a border with it, while vertical scars will appear in the center of the breast, usually on the underside. The inverted T scar will actually consist of two scars, one which is vertical and another which is horizontal.

Which Type of Scars Is The Least Noticeable?

Understandably, most women will want incisions which leave behind the least noticeable scars. Out of the three scars, the smallest which is the least noticeable is the Benelli scar. This scar will eventually be completely hidden as it heals because it will fade inside the lining near the nipple. However, a lot of women don’t mind the vertical scar because it is located on the breast’s underside, which means that it isn’t horizontally visible near the chest wall. The inverted T is the most visible as it consists of two scars.

Do Scars Cause Any Complications?

Scars should cause no complications so long as the procedure is performed by a competent, licensed surgeon. Most plastic surgeons go for the inverted T simply because it is the incision which is most common practiced. The other two incision types are much newer, and not as widely utilized. Any surgical procedure carries the risk of complications, but the percentage of scarring complications is low – 10 percent for inverted T scars and 5 percent for Benelli or vertical scars.

Any woman who is considering breast augmentation should check with her surgeon to see what types of incisions are performed. Those that are concerned about scarring can let the surgeon know so that he or she can guide the patient further on the scarring issue.
